Fort Thomas Highlands kicked off the 2016 regular season with a win against Kentucky Class 6A Cooper in Fort Thomas Friday evening.  The Highlands ground game spearheaded the offensive attack, amassing 367 total rushing yards in the contest.  Running backs Grant Murray and Jared Pulsfort ran for 161 yards and 131 yards, respectively, and quarterback Brady Gosney rushed for 71 yards and 2 scores in addition to completing 8 of his 10 passing attempts for 121 yards and no interceptions.  The defense registered 3 fumble recoveries to assist in the victory over Cooper, a team that had defeated Highlands during last year's opening week.  Highlands is now 1-1 all-time against Cooper.  The Bluebirds made improvements to their game plan following last week's 50-8 loss to Cincinnati (Ohio) Saint Xavier in a preseason scrimmage.  On Saturday, the Highlands junior varsity (JV) team defeated the Cooper JV squad 44-16 and the Highlands freshman team had a strong showing against the Louisville Trinity freshman team, coming up short by a score of 27-18.  Highlands takes on Class 6A Campbell County next Friday in the Bluebirds' first road game of the regular season.
