Bluebirds Defeat Colonels in Regional Final to Set Up a Showdown Between Defending Champions

Fort Thomas Highlands continued its run of dominance over rival Covington Catholic Friday evening, doubling up the Colonels by a score of 44-22 to capture the regional title. Quarterback Austin Hergott led the Highlands offense, completing 11 of his 18 passing attempts for 168 yards, 2 scores and no interceptions. Running back Nick Kendall led all Highlands rushers with 222 yards and 3 scores on 25 carries. Wide receiver Eric Miller caught a team-best 7 receptions for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns in the game. Linebacker/kicker Jared Dougherty successfully made all 5 extra point attempts along with recovering 2 fumbles in the contest. Highlands has not lost to Covington Catholic in varsity football since 2006. This win sets up a Class 5A state semifinal game between 2 defending state football champions; Highlands won the Class 4A title last year (before moving up to Class 5A this season), while Pulaski County captured the Class 5A championship in 2014. The winner of this contest, played at Highlands on Friday, November 27, advances to the 2015 Kentucky Class 5A state championship game.
