Highlands Blasts Dixie Heights to Open District Play

Fort Thomas Highlands, coming off its bye, kicked off district play with a 42-7 victory over Dixie Heights Friday evening. On offense, running back Nick Kendall amassed 115 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns, while running back Grant Murray ran for 72 yards against the Colonels. Quarterback Austin Hergott completed 10 of his 17 passing attempts for 77 yards, 1 touchdown and no interceptions. Defensively, the Bluebirds recovered 3 Dixie Heights fumbles and registered 1 interception in the contest. This game, which was Homecoming for Highlands, marked the first time this season the 'Birds played a team in its class (Kentucky Class 5A), as all of its previous games have been against Class 6A competition. The Bluebirds look to build on this win heading into next week's game against rival Covington Catholic; the winner of this year's Highlands-Covington Catholic game will likely capture the district title.
On Saturday, the Highlands junior varsity (JV) team shut out the Dixie Heights JV team by a score of 22-0. Last week, while the Highlands varsity and JV squads had byes, the Highlands freshman team lost to the Covington Catholic team 39-21. This week, the Highlands freshman squad got back on track with a 19-18 win against the Conner freshman team.
