Highlands Drops Season Opener to Cooper

Fort Thomas Highlands commenced the regular season with a loss to Kentucky Class 6A Cooper by a score of 37-13 Friday evening, marking the first time the 'Birds have lost a season opener since 2002.  The Highlands offense struggled against a solid Cooper defense, which held the Bluebirds to just 1 offensive score in the contest.  Quarterback Austin Hergott completed 11 of his 28 passing attempts for 169 yards, but did register 4 interceptions in the game.  On the ground, running back Nick Kendall led all Highlands rushers with 42 yards and accounted for Highlands' only offense touchdown.  Return specialist Austin Beal returned a Cooper punt for a touchdown in the first half.  Highlands was trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter before Cooper scored 2 touchdowns late in the game to extend the lead to 37-13.  This loss marks Highlands' largest margin of defeat since the 'Birds were downed by Columbus (Ohio) DeSales by a score of 48-22 in 2005.  
 
The Highlands junior varsity (JV) team defeated the Cooper JV team by a score of 38-24 on Saturday, and the Highlands freshman squad opened up its 2015 season with a loss to the Louisville Trinity freshman team by a score of 37-7 on Saturday.
