Highlands Set to Kick Off 2015 Regular Season

Fort Thomas Highlands kicks off the 2015 regular season Friday night.  The Bluebirds will take on host Kentucky Class 6A Cooper at 7:00PM.  This game is part of the 2015 Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown, currently the nation's largest prep football event.  Highlands, the defending Kentucky Class 4A state champion, moves up to Class 5A this season and looks to continue its winning tradition.  The 'Birds have captured state football titles in 7 of the previous 8 years.  Fort Thomas Highlands enters the season ranked first in Kentucky Class 5A according to BluegrassPreps.com, and ranked first in all of Northern Kentucky, regardless of football classification, in the Northern Kentucky preseason coaches' poll as well as the TriStateFootball.com rankings.  The Bluebirds are led by Coach Brian Weinrich, who won a state title in his first year as head football coach in 2014.  On the field, the 'Birds will be under the direction of senior quarterback Austin Hergott, who has committed to play collegiate football at NCAA FBS Central Michigan University next year.  This past weekend, Highlands came up short in a preseason scrimmage against Cincinnati powerhouse Saint Xavier by a score of 48-22.  The contest Friday night marks the first time that Highlands will face off against Northern Kentucky opponent Cooper in varsity football.
